The cities we will visit in Greece are in boldface type in the header map above.
Aug. 26  Departure from Cincinnati airport.
Day 1  Early afternoon arrival at Athens airport.  Travel Agency representative will meet us and transfer us to hotel  by coach.   The hotel is situated off Syntagma (Constitution) Square where Greece’s Parliament is situated. Syntagma Square is one of the most central locations of Athens.  After a brief orientation session and room assignments, rest of the afternoon and evening free.  I recommend a walk to the Parliament and to also witness the changing of the guards, which occurs on the hour every hour, then a stroll through the Plaka area nearby.  We should return to the hotel by 8 pm.  The hotel has a roof garden with a restaurant. I recommend having dinner there about 9 pm.  The roof garden offers a unique and unobstructed vista of Acropolis and its many buildings illuminated at night.  This will be our first night in Greece.
Day 2  Breakfast (included throughout the trip). Early morning sightseeing tour of Athens by coach. Drop off at Acropolis.  Tour of Acropolis and its museum. Two p.m. pickup by coach to drive to Cape Sounion to visit the Temple of Poseidon. Swimming and water sports on the way. Stay until sunset at the Temple. Stop for dinner on the way back. Expected return to our hotel about midnight. This is our second night in Greece.
Day 3  Departure for a 6-day five-night bus tour. We will cross the Corinth Canal (short stop there), to enter the Peloponessos.  We will visit the archaeological site of the city of Mycenae and the tomb of Agamemnon, pass by the ancient city of Tyrins, and then in late afternoon we will arrive at Tolo, a resort like village by the sea nearby the city of Nafplion to spend three nights at the hotel King Minos. This is night three.
Day 4  Free day at Tolo. For a small extra cost to those who wish to do so, we will rent a boat to go to a nearby deserted island to spend the day swimming, fishing, and relaxing. The cost includes drinks and food.  Return to Tolo for our second night there. This is night four.
Day 5  We will visit the museum and theater of Epidavros that is world-famous for its acoustics. Return to Tolo. That evening we will drive to nearby Nafplion to explore this most beautiful city and have dinner there. Return to Tolo late evening. This is night five.
Day 6  Early morning departure for the drive to the city of Olympia. In that city we will visit the site and the museum and spend a leisurely afternoon and evening there. We will stay at the hotel Ilis. This is night six.
Day 7  The next day we will drive north to the city of Patras then to Rio to board the ferry that will take us across the gulf to Antirion (about a half hour boat ride) and continue to Delphi. We will spend the night at the hotel Fedriades.  This is night seven.
Day 8  Early morning visit to the site and museum of Delphi.  Drive back to Athens in the afternoon. We will stay again at hotel Astor. This is night eight.
Day 9  Free day in Athens. This is our ninth and final night in Greece.
Sept. 5   Departure Day. Coach ride to the airport. Arrive in Cincinnati late on Sept. 5.

A deposit of $200 dollars per person is required as soon as possible to secure your place. Please bring your deposit checks to me or to Sandi Delabar, Secretary of Social Sciences Department, or mail them to our SSU address or put in an envelope and push under my office’s door. Sandi's e-mail is sdelabar@shawnee.edu and her work phone number is 351-3234 during her regular office hours, Monday-Friday 8-5.

Make check payable to “Stylianos Hadjiyannis If a participant can pay for the entire cost of the trip in one payment it is recommended that they should do so.

When you give us your deposit please indicate to us if you:

ü      Will be taking the tour as a student

ü      Wish double or triple occupancy

If you are traveling alone we will find same gender roommates for you.  Triple occupancy makes sense not only because it is less expensive but also we would hardly spend much time in our rooms. It also makes sense to get at least 30 participants (see above prices), so please help us promote the tour.

When you give us your deposit please provide us with your

Ø     Current e-mail address

Ø     Home address

Ø     Phone number

By mid April or as soon as enough participants to make the trip a go have turned in their checks, I will cash all of them and wire payments to Greece. You will be notified prior to cashing the checks to ensure there is no change in your plans to participate. If you decide to cancel on the trip your check will be returned to you.  Once the Greek agent has forwarded the payments to the airlines you might still be able to cancel but please note: the airlines charge a penalty fee for cancellation so you will not receive full repayment.

The rest of the money can be paid in installments as follows:  By mid May $1000 and by mid June the remainder.  This payment plan contains a certain degree of flexibility but please try to be prompt.  Please let me know as soon as problems with your payments develop. All checks must be made in my name. If you wish to pay the rest of the payments by credit card let us know.

Most of the cost of the trip is for the airfare. We will be flying during high season, across 7 time zones, and about 6,000 miles each way. As for the land package, Fantasy Travel Agency in Greece has come up, in my mind, with a great price given all that it includes: notice the three nights at King Minos hotel, a rather expensive but great hotel (dinners included), and that we will have our own coach 24 hours each day. The driver will be, once more, none other than the great George (Yorgos) Tsaparis, and the guide will be Anna Benaki. The cost also is a reflection of the weakness of the dollar vis-à-vis the euro. You need roughly 135 cents to buy a euro whereas in the summer of 2002 you only needed 86 cents to do so. Other contributing factors to the costs are the high tourist season and fuel surcharges due to rising oil prices.

All participants will need a valid passport. See me for information on how to obtain one. No visa is required for US passports. For non-US passport holders please check with your country’s consulate or with the Greek consulate/embassy on the Internet.

For all participants (US or non-US): The complete name you will give me or Sandi in order for us to make the airline reservations and have the ticket issued in your name must be identical to the name in your passport.

Please note: Priority for participation is for those who take the tour as students. This is a fall quarter 2005 course. You will need to register for this class, as you do with your other classes, when fall quarter registration begins sometime during spring/summer quarter.

However, if less than 30 students are enrolled there will be space for  “community members” to join the group. “Community members” are defined as any person willing to participate. Priority will be given to relatives/significant others/friends of enrolled students. You are welcome to submit their names (and deposit money). They will be accepted on a first signed up basis.

There will be 3 to 4 pre-trip orientation group meetings. Participants will be notified accordingly and in a timely manner when those will occur. All participants are required to attend these. Many aspects of the trip and travel advisories will be discussed. The “omicron” Internet site listed above contains a wealth of info in this regard. Please consult it often. There will also be a series of meetings of an academic nature. All enrolled students are required to attend. Non-student participants may attend if they so wish.

Finally, I look forward to being your professor and guide in a great study tour such as this if the past seven tours are an indication of its worth. For returning veterans I feel doubly, triply, and in one case five-times honored in sharing this adventure with you. Please see me for any questions not discussed here or elsewhere in this site.

Summary of Important points:

In making a deposit to ensure your reservation and participation, indicate to me or Sandi whether you will be taking the tour as an enrolled student, give us your name as it will appear in your passport, provide us with a valid e-mail address, indicate your rooming preferences, obtain a passport, observe the payment deadlines, attend the meetings, inform us of changes in your plans, enroll in the course, promote the tour to other students and community members, peruse the web site for this trip, and be prepared to have a great educational and fun experience.
