Shawnee State University’s Local History Workshop

The Scioto River runs south through modern-day Columbus, growing in strength and width, until its confluence with the Ohio.  Its waters eventually reach the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.  The Scioto Valley has been the site of human societies going back thousands of years and has been the scene of many significant historical events related to the development of the modern United States.

This website takes as its focus the lower portion of the Scioto River Valley -- from the old first capital of Ohio, Chillicothe in Ross county, down through Pike and Scioto counties, to its mouth in the City of Portsmouth.  The Ohio counties of Adams, Highland, and Jackson, and the adjacent Kentucky counties of Lewis and Greenup are also included for here you will find the headwaters of various tributaries of the Lower Scioto and the lands on the southern side of the Ohio at the confluence of these two major rivers.

On this website you will find links to digital archives of primary documents, maps, images, and oral histories related to the history of this fascinating region.  In addition to our own on-line primary source material, including Stories of Life & Labor:  Oral Histories from Portsmouth, Ohio, this website serves as a portal to historical societies, museums, and other historical sites of interest to students of the local and regional history of the Lower Scioto Valley.
